Your old sofa doesn’t have to go to the curb just because it doesn’t match your new decor | miOaklandCounty.com

A few months ago I was doing a final walk through with a buyer prior to close. The seller met us there to explain a few of the high tech features of the home to the new owner. When we came across a dining room set in the basement and some other furniture in the garage, the seller assured us that it would be picked up that day by the Furniture Bank of Oakland County. That was the first I ever heard of the organization, so I did a bit of investigating and was impressed with what I found. I run into a lot of unwanted furniture in this business and am happy to have a great resource to suggest to my clients.

Their mission:

The Furniture Bank is the only organization in Oakland County that distributes home furnishings to families and individuals in crisis, without charge. Imagine for a moment what your house would be like with no furniture. Self-sufficiency is very difficult to achieve when your primary worry is that your children are sleeping on the floor and you have no way to make them dinner.

Since 1968, the Furniture Bank of Oakland County has helped people turn an empty house into a home so they can focus on steady employment and self-sufficiency. With your help, the Furniture Bank plays a crucial role in providing the household items necessary for a stable home environment - chairs to sit in, a stove to cook on and a bed to sleep in!

People seeking assistance from the Furniture Bank include the homeless, the working poor, victims of fire, and families fleeing domestic violence.

I’ve gotten rid of furniture in the past using freecycle.org. That is an easy way to give something away. But I really like the thought of my furniture going to someone whose life might be mademuch better by it. If you are moving, and need to get rid of somethings before you go, the come to your home and pick it up. What could be easier?

I was going to make a crack about sending your couch to Columbus for the OSU students to use after a Buckeye victory (or a loss in other years… they seem to be indiscriminate couch burners.)

We have a similar charity in Columbus, MAP, it has not been around as long… but it is a great use for old furniture… I’m feeling a CBB entry about MAP coming on… with a hat tip to MIOAKLANDCOUNTY.com of course.

I read your mention of the OSU students burning couches. I wonder if that is what subliminally set this post to stirring about in my mind?
