Even tony Birmingham has been effected by Michigan’s faltering economy. Many local communities have been proactive in nurturing business development and expanding their base of restaurants and retailers. Ferndale, Royal Oak and Troy come to mind
So now the Birmingham city commission is responding to citizens’ requests and looking at creating a new class of liquor license, called bistro licenses, so that alcohol can be served in restaurants without bars. Anectodotally, when I was in Chicago not long ago, I found out that Cosi’s there serve liquor. It turns out that the Cosi in Birmingham is the only one in the chain where patrons cannot get a drink.
We think that these bistro licenses are important for the future of downtown Birmingham. We have lots of empty retail space right now and Class C liquor licenses are too expensive for smaller, non-franchise restaurants, that would help Birmingham maintain its unique character.
