Farmers Markets Offer Fun and Great Food | miOaklandCounty.com

I love Saturday trips to Detroit’s Eastern Market. What a treasure! As an avid gardener, the Eastern Market is the often the source of my best finds. My inner chef loves the beautiful selection of fresh produce. The shops and restaurants are fun. And South East Michigan’s pumpernickel bread authority, my husband Dmitry, has declared that the bread I buy him there is the best outside of his native Ukraine. Believe me, he has thoroughly investigated the local pumpernickel supply. For me, Eastern Market is the ultimate farmers market in the area. It’s over 200 years old, so I guess I am not the only one who feels that they are doing something right.

There are other farmers markets I enjoy too. Especially this time of year, when the colorful end of the season vegetables are coming in.

Sundays are a great day to head over to the Birmingham Farmers Market, which is held from 9 to 2 in the parking lot on Old Woodward at Harmon. The organizers, in true Birmingham style, have kicked it up a notch, with entertainment, activities for kids, and a top-shelf vendors.

Royal Oak and Pontiac both have permanent structures to host their farmers markets. Both are held on Saturdays, with flea markets on Sundays. Royal Oak is also a farmers market on Friday.

Check them all out. In addition to the great fresh food you’ll enjoy at home, its certainly more fun than a weekend trip to Farmer Jacks.

I have to share this because to me our farmers market is one of the reasons I love St. Paul. It is downtown in the warehouse district. I have a short post with a picture. We have a large hmong population here so we have a lot of hand made craft items at our market. http://www.stpaulrealestateblog.com/st_paul_real_estate/2006/06/city_living.html
