A Hummer was a drink before it was a truck — Even in the Motor City

by Maureen Francis on October 9, 2006

in Metro Detroit

The hummer, cold duck, the bullshot, and the Boston Cooler.

If we were playing MadLibs they would all be great to insert into the mystery sentence. What they have in common, along with the more obvious Vernors, is that they were all invented in Detroit.

I had never heard of the Bullshot until today. Don’t know if they’re still ordered much, but it sounds interesting–beef bullion is an ingredient! Add in vodka, lemon, worcestershire sauce, Tabasco bitters and celery salt, and you’ve got a Bullshot. Sounds kind of like lunch with vodka poured in it, doesn’t it?

That Vernors… Not too common outside of Detroit, but those of us who grew up here love it. Others say its an acquired taste. Vernors is one of those sodas that fizzes up your nose and makes you sneeze. I don’t make it sound appealing, but it is.
