Dear Mrs & Mrs. Seller,
Personally, I love local politics. I am a channel 15 junkie. That is our local cable access channel that airs Birmingham City Council meetings, Beverly Hills Village Council meetings and lots of other very local programming like the annual bloodhound parade. It’s the best reality TV around. And I like knowing about the issues that impact property values and life in the communities I serve.
This time of year, politics crank up into full gear as election day is quickly approaching. Yards are filled with signs reminding us to support the millage renewal, the library millage, and all of the various candidates willing to serve in every office from dog catcher to governor.
But if your house is for sale, you should only have one sign on your lawn. Mine.
I’ve had this discussion with other sellers in the past. I am all for free speech. I am glad you want to engage in the political process. I love that you are a concerned voter. Next year, when you are in your new home, you can put up 20 signs to make up for this year. I NEED those politcal signs down NOW.
There are a couple of reasons I feel strongly about this:
- The shear number of signs on lawns right now dilutes the impact of my For Sale sign. People start to tune out all the signs. Most likely you would agree that you care more about getting top dollar for your home soon, than you do about your aunt’s friend Millie who wants to be on the library board.
- Your political signs might have a negative impact on potential buyers. Perhaps they disagree with you politically. It could be a subtle unconscious influence on their opinion of your home.
- The visual clutter distracts from the beauty of your landscaping. You want them to remember your house not your candidate.
So, do yourselves a favor. Help me get your house sold. Millie can win the library board seat without you. Take down those signs.
