A few weeks ago I write a blurb inquiring about the pace of Wireless Oakland, an ambitious and exciting plan to offer wireless internet service. One reader felt I didn’t have a grip on how long it takes to do these things. Clearly, I don’t.
While I have no intention in turning this in to the “Wireless Oakland Blog” in the spirit of fairness, and because I think the project is exciting, I have something new to share. Today’s Freep says that there will be an army of workers climbing utility poles in Troy to set up the service for residents in the area bordered by Maple, John R, Wattles and Adams. Projections are that the rest of Oakland County will be wireless by early 2008.
The county is touting wireless as an important tool for attracting tech savvy professionals and companies interested in relocating to The O.C. (That’s Oakland County in homage to Governor Jennifer Granholm’s Cool Cities campaign).

Downtown Long Beach has a wireless hub set up for some time now. I was so excited about it, brought my wireless laptop with me to an open house expecting to get service. Had to walk around the house trying to find a spot where I could pick up the service. Then had to keep changing spots to get even the weakest of service until I finally gave up. While it is a great concept I think it still needs some work.
