It should come as no surprise to outsiders that Metro Detroit scrapped most of its mass transit system in the 1950′s. Afterall, we are still the automotive capital of the world. Clearly our short sided protectionist rush to support our main industry backfired. Metro Detroit has become one of the most segregated cities in the US. But diversity isn’t the only issue we face as a result of ripping out trolley lines and killing off the railroad. We have created sprawl, and a formerly strong downtown with an aging infrastructure and a decreasing tax base.
So I was somewhat excited when I ran across this article by Achille Bianchi in the South End. We have a long way to go, but somebody needs to make the push to bring back a meaningful mass transit system to the Metro Detroit region.

I hope Detroit has better luck with a mass transit project than Seattle did. I think mass transit is a must for American cities.

Kudo. I hope more people in Oakland County make a ruckus about the need for mass transit.

From your lips to the gods’ ears Maureen. I hope both of our areas get on the ball – with all the reading on it I have been doing lately, it seems like a terrific draw for jobs; as well as the railroads now! lol BTW, I’m pushing everyone to call their Senators and support SB294 which allows federal monies to be set aside for Amtrak upgrades that can be done in a way to automatically tie into improved train systems that may develop. Sorry for the plug it just came to me lol
