The Whitney Has Changed Hands

Library at The Whitney in Detroit
Ironically enough my Valentine’s day post is about the place where Dmitry and I were married, The Whitney, a beautiful restaurant in Detroit. The mansion was built by David Whitney, a lumber baron, in 1894 and a newspaper at the time described it as “the most elaborate and substantial residence in this part of the country.” I’ve included this particular photo of the library because that is the room where our family and guests dined.

I recommend a quick tour of their web site as they have done a great job of presenting the history of the mansion. The Freep has reported that a former neighbor of ours, Bud Liebler, has just bought The Whitney and he is planning on making some changes over the coming months. We’re looking forward to seeing his vision.

Happy Valentine’s Day. If you are in Detroit, why not have lunch or dinner today at The Whitney? I think we might.

Maureen what a beautiful structure. Rare pink granite alone makes me want to visit it — sounds like you had a pretty romantic setting for a wedding. I also like the sound of the creamed asparagus soup with hazelnut cream fraiche on the menu. Two of life’s food gifts in one bowl lol.

Carole,

It really is a very special building. We were married in front of a gorgeous Tiffany stained glass window that went from the floor to the ceiling. Yes, it is a romantic place. And the food is outstanding in its own right. Even though our wedding was small, the servers and bus boys remember us when we go back for our anniversary.

What a lovely room. My wife would be enchanted. There is a place here in WA that is an old castle. This room reminds me of it.

I’m getting married this year at the Kohl Mansion in Burlingame, CA…It looks very similar to the Whitney…which means we have the same good taste. I’m sure if we lived in your area, we would probably get married there too.
