Hands Along Woodward & Dream Cruise Are Here!
Published August 16th, 2007 in Metro Detroit, Things to do.
This weekend is a biggie for Metro Detroit. The Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise, the world’s largest gathering of classic cars, takes place. The official date is Saturday, but those of us who live and work along Woodward all know that it began in full swing last week, with the beautiful old cars taking laps up and down the boulevard, and stopping to hang out along the way. We’ve always hung out in Birmingham on cruise day and enjoyed the fun.
Sunday is Hands Across Woodward, a celebration of the 200th anniversary of America’s first paved road. Woodward is like Michigan’s main street, and communities all along the street will be celebrating. More on woodward avenue.org. And a few highlights from local groups:
-- The Birmingham Unitarian Church, 38651 Woodward Avenue, will present a
potluck dinner after the 10:30 a.m. service, followed by a film at
12:30 p.m. A Gleaners container will be located in the church foyer
for those wishing to contribute food and personal items.
-- Christ Church Cranbrook carillonneur, Dr. Joseph Daniel, has scheduled
peals for the enjoyment of area residents.
-- The Congregational Church of Birmingham, United Church of Christ, 1000
Cranbrook Rd., has also planned a potluck picnic after the 10:30 a.m.
service and a moonwalk for children. They have invited their sister
church in Detroit, Trinity St. Mark's Church, to join them for the day
and take advantage of strolling over to Cranbrook to visit the grounds
and museums until shortly before 2 p.m.
-- Cranbrook Educational Community, in collaboration with the City of
Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township and the WA3, will present Family
Day at Cranbrook during Hands Along Woodward. Visitors are invited to
experience Cranbrook Institute of Science, Cranbrook Art Museum or
Cranbrook House and Gardens for just 200 pennies ($2) per person per
venue. Then, beginning at 1 p.m., a free shuttle will take visitors
to Woodward Avenue to participate in the historic "Hands Along
Woodward" event at 2 p.m. Families may also picnic on the grounds,
tour gardens, walk the campus and visit museums and historic homes.
-- The Detroit Zoo will offer $2 child admission to the Zoo with the
purchase of regular adult admission, $2 for a Wild Adventure Ride and
$2 off any gift shop purchase over $10.
-- Ferndale Woodward Dream Cruise and Retrofest - From 12:00 p.m. to 5:00
pm on West Nine Mile Rd. at Woodward Avenue. Attractions will include
live entertainment featuring Nobody's Business and Paisley Fogg as
well as a Cruiz'n Food Court, Kids Play Zone, with special exhibits by
the Ford Rouge Factory Mobile Tour, Detroit Muscle Custom Hot Rods
Showcase, Ferndale Historical Museum, U of Detroit Mercy College
Students of Engineering & Science and the Metro Detroit Scooter Show.
-- Fox and Hounds will host a special event from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. for
Bloomfield Hills residents in honor of the Bloomfield Hill's 75th
Anniversary and Hands Along Woodward. Attractions will include
complimentary hot dogs, soft drinks, live entertainment by "The
Viceroys." Canned goods, personal items and cash donations will be
accepted for the Gleaners Food Bank. Free parking available. Event
is sponsored by the A.F. Jonna Development Company.

Where was America’s first paved road? I’ll be ready if that question comes up in a trivia contest.
Who doesn’t love classic cars? Seems everybody does and hollywood has jumped on the bandwagon too. You see them in just about every movie and TV show now.
I don’t know what kind of car that is in the photo but I would certainly love to own it!
