Clearly there was some interest in the home, but my friend was calling to ask me where he could find the garage door opener. We have a lot of homes in the city with detached garages. If your home is on the market and the garage is detached, please leave a key or garage door opener out where buyers and their agents can find it. Often we are unable to look at the garage when touring a home because there is no way to get into it. Most buyers will not write an offer on a home until they see everything, and that does include the garage.

Newer homes have attached garages. Often the seller goes from garage to house through a connecting door that is always left unlocked. Sellers should make sure that they have house keys with them when they leave because of a showing. Most REALTORS know enough not to lock the door between the garage and the house but our buyers sometimes lock the door.
